I recently finished my internship at Redmoon Theater. It was an inspiring, craft/labor-intensive, enjoyable and curious time. Most of our time went into preparing for Spectacle Lunatique, Redmoon’s annual fundraiser gala.

After Lunatique, we began working on a children’s show that Redmoon is collaborating on with Chicago Children’s Theater. It involves puppetry, shadow animation, musical and so on. It’s an exciting multi-media play.

I recently finished my internship at Redmoon Theater. It was an inspiring, craft/labor-intensive, enjoyable and curious time.

During our term, we worked mainly on preparing for Spectacle Lunatique, Redmoon’s annual fundraiser gala. We helped paint murals, strip tree branches and paint them, give bikes makeovers, papier-maché for hundreds of hours, make a gramophone, and lots more.

I have the honor of having my Smart Dillo campaign win Best in Show at the 2013 International ACUI Conference! The Smart Dillo campaign was made last year at Student Affairs Marketing, where I work.

My department made this poster to celebrate, and will be covering the costs for me to attend this conference. I will be in St. Louis next week to receive the award.

Exciting times.

Tonight, I decided to do this unusual thing on my blog that is otherwise full of only images of things I make. Tonight, I’m spelling out some thoughts.

I’ve been working on this short film lately, Portraiture, which I’ve written two years ago in a class and since then been very slowly developing. It got funded through some grants last spring, and now pre-production is in full swing. The shoot is less than a month ahead.

Words cannot express (at least not my words) all the swirling thoughts and feelings I have….

…leading up to this shoot, partly because there’s too many, and partly cuz I just don’t know them all. And every now and then I have to stop and tell myself not to make such a huge deal out of this, because placing too high expectations on this is unhealthy and has potentials for scary results. But the truth is, I’m so excited to finally see this story come to life, and yes, I have high expectations for myself. And that’s okay too.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think I usually am quite confident about it having a good result. It may be because of how well received my last documentary was, but I think it’s more so a personality thing, an innate thing, and probably also this age thing—I just have this inexplicable sense of faith that the film will turn out well. It’s not something I have to keep telling myself. It’s more like… if I didn’t have that kind of belief, I wouldn’t really be making this movie anyway. With stakes as high as $5000 and a crew of 40 people.

That said, every now and then I feel this storm of uneasiness about the film’s outcome. It’s sometimes triggered by reasonable worries that come with filmmaking, and especially as an amateur. But actually, its source is often just as unclear as my confidence for this movie. Realistically, the chances of the film’s failure is just as equal as its success. And do I actually measure these things? Not at all. It’s not quite measurable anyway. After all, my talk of success and failure in this post is my judgement. My own film’s success is largely dependent on how satisfied I feel. And I am a tough crowd to please, especially with my own work. Much like any filmmaker, I guess.

And by this point of the debate, I start thinking… ok, big deal. success. failure. whatever. just make the movie. I’ll do my best regardless. I make what I want to make. you like what you made, great, you move on. you dislike what you made, it’s ok, still move on. Make the next one.

Now, that’s a thought that doesn’t come to me all naturally. That’s what I tell myself.

Instinctively, I have a fierce ambition to make this good. The film is also immensely personal. I’ve put so much of myself in it that I feel incredibly vulnerable even just talking about it, let alone putting it out in the world. But that’s what artists do. And every writer-directors out there that make personal work, whether it’s drama or comedy or whatever, puts themselves to a vulnerable position. Perhaps some of my fear comes from the chance of unsuccessfully delivering this work I’m emotionally attached to.

Today, I got to workshop my script in class. I was quite surprisingly nervous. And learned a bunch of things I can still fix in my script. Well, not really a bunch. More like one glaring problem. The problem that’s been going on. And the hardest problem. The relationship. And how the viewer can get attached to the characters.

I’ve been recommended Blue Valentine, so I finally watched it tonight, in hopes of finding inspiration. At the end, I was more emotionally touched than inspired. Which is a great thing for that movie. I thought back to my previous film, ExamiNation, and despite it being a documentary, the greatest comments from viewers were always that they were touched by it.

In class, we talked about my script being a conceptual one, etc. etc., and yes, it’s quite a conceptual one (can’t abandon the habits from fine art practice), but I realize that ultimately.. I want my viewers feeling something. They don’t have to understand everything, no, not at all, but yes they need to feel something. And if I do it right, then that’ll be one hell of an achievement.

After all, the movies that are close to my heart are remembered less by their stories, and more by how I felt. Perhaps this is why I tend to neglect the narrative a bit when writing my script. I focus so much on trying to create a mood out of pacing and visuals. But tonight, after all this rambling, I’m reminded that the story is still the basis of the feelings, because they come from believable and interesting characters. Tonight, I’m learning this not from a book or a lecture but in the most organic way.

All thoughts and rambling aside, I need to fix the script again. And take up some courage, because today I shrank a little.

But right now… I need to sleep.
